History
The symbolic beginning of the winery was in 1827, when Abraham Teperberg escaped from Odessa to Austria and there studied the secrets of wine.
When he immigrated to Israel in 1870, he built together with his son Zeev, who is acknowledged as founder of the company, the first winery in the old city. The name Efrat was choosen according to the biblical street „Efrata is Beth-Lechem“, the way on which the grapes were brought to the winery. The hebrew name shows, that here it started to produce kosher wine for the commercial market, here in Israel.
The beginning wasn't easy, during the days of trouble in 1929, the winery suffered under the activities of the criminals and was nearly closed. Despite those crises, the third generation of the family carried on the management of the winery. 1950 the winery was build in Nachalat Yitzchak and relocated 1964 into the lower Motza. 2002 twenty dunes were bought in Tzora in order to start a new vineyard there, to which the winery was relocated in 2006.
Today the winery is lead by Motti Teperberg, the 5th generation of the Teperberg family. The family property is one of the landmarks of the company and lately with Amotz Teperberg the 6th generation stepped into the company. He combines work with scientific studies.
